frequently asked questions

Why is the label on your website different than the label on the box I received?

We have received an updated EUA (emergency use authorization) from the FDA with new labeling required. Please see the new labels & collection instructions below.

Does this nasal PCR test have an age limit?

Yes! Our FDA authorization (EUA) only allows those at least 18 years of age to use the At Home COVID-19 Nasal PCR Test Kit.

What’s the difference between nasal swab test and mask testing?

Nasal swab testing is a clinical test, which is the best way to diagnose if an individual has COVID-19. Clinical test results are specific to an individual and therefore protect by patient privacy laws, and results are available within 48 hours.

Mask testing tests multiple masks as a method of environmental surveillance, not for COVID-19 screening or diagnosis. Mask testing also has a lower price point, making it easier to test for the virus more frequently, and provides pooled results rather than individual results.

What's your refund / cancellation / replacement policy?

  • For orders that have not shipped, they are eligible for a 100% refund.
  • For orders 30 days or less since purchase date, they are eligible for a full refund less $20 USD per test kit to cover shipping, handling, and processing fees. Please include the Kit ID information when you contact us.
  • For orders over 30 days old and orders where results have been released, they are not eligible for any refund.

What are the FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) details?

This home-collection kit has not been FDA cleared or approved; rather it has been authorized by FDA under an EUA only for the self-collection and maintenance of nasal swab specimens as an aid in detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2, and not for any other viruses or pathogens, and only for the duration of the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the authorization of emergency use of in medical devices during the COVID-19 outbreak under Section 564(b)(1) of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, 21 U.S.C. § 360bbb-3(b)(1), unless the authorization is terminated or revoked sooner.

Can I order a test for someone else?

The person ordering and activating this test MUST be the individual who collects the nasal sample and views the test results. This product cannot be gifted to someone else, and our lab will not deliver results in this case.

How can I order multiple tests?

You can order multiple test kits for yourself by repeating the entire ordering process. Do not order for another person using your personal account.

If more than one person needs a test kit, please order each kit with a separate name and email address.

How sensitive is the Nasal PCR Test?

As of December 2020, our lab’s SARS-CoV-2 assay offers the best sensitivity of the 118 laboratories that have submitted results to FDA’s SARS-CoV-2 Reference Panel, with a limit of detection (LoD) of 180 NAAT Detectable Units/mL1.

Are you a CLIA certified clinical laboratory?

Absolutely. Our clinical labs are CLIA certified. CLIA stand for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. This means that The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regulate all our clinical tests and make sure they meet rigorous quality standards. Here’s a breakdown on CLIA certification by the FDA.

However, our PCR mask testing lab is not CLIA certified because it’s not a clinical lab, it’s an environmental testing lab. Here’s their accreditation: “ISO / IEC 17025:2005 Certificate Number: Biological 2918.04”.

Does my kit expire?

We encourage you to use your kit within 60 days to avoid any issues with a potentially expired kit. All test kits must be registered and returned to the lab before the kit’s expiration date labeled on the outside of the kit. Any samples sent back to the lab after the listed expiration date will not be processed. We are unable to provide a replacement kit due to expiration.

If you can’t find your kit expiration date, reach out to Customer Care for clarity.

What if my nose swab is missing from my kit?

Please contact Customer Care if you receive a kit that’s missing a nasal swab. We’ll be sure to send you another one at no additional cost to you. You CANNOT use any other swab or Q-tip as a replacement. The lab will NOT process your sample if you use a different swab or tube.

What if my plastic saline tube is missing from my kit?

Please contact Customer Care if you receive a kit that’s missing a plastic saline tube. We’ll mail you another one at no additional cost to you. You CANNOT use any other tube as a replacement. The lab will NOT process your sample if you use a different swab or tube.

What if my plastic saline tube is dry or contains no saline?

Please contact Customer Care if you receive a kit that has a dry saline tube. We’ll mail you another one at no additional cost to you. You CANNOT use any other tube as a replacement. The lab will NOT process your sample if you use a different swab or tube.

Is my test covered?

Many COVID-19 diagnostic tests are covered by the CARES Act, which states that private insurers generally must waive costs associated with testing. However, it’s important that you contact your insurance provider before you order to verify if your test is 100% covered based on the CARES Act requirements.

When will I know if my test is covered?

After you’ve been tested and your results have been offered, you’ll receive a notice indicating if your insurance provider covered your at-home COVID-19 test from empowerDX.

How can I pay with insurance?

Getting your at-home COVID-19 test through insurance shouldn’t have to be difficult. After all, you deserve to focus on your health.

With empowerDX, we do our best to make the process as easy as possible. Just fill out your insurance info, and we’ll bill your insurance for you.

How to pay with insurance:

  1. Click “Insurance Pay”
  2. Fill out the form detailing your symptoms and personal information.
  3. In the field asking “Do you have insurance?”, select yes.
  4. Select your provider. (If your provider is not listed, select “My insurance provider is not listed” and type your insurance provider name in the blank field.)
  5. Fill out your Insurance Policy ID number and Group number.
  6. Submit your test, and we’ll bill your insurance provider for your at-home COVID-19 test.

When will you bill my insurance?

Your insurance is billed when the sample is processed by the lab. It’s important to pay attention to the expiration date on the label. We will not offer replacement kits for expired, unused kits. If you send in your sample and the kit has expired, we will not be able to test your sample and offer results.

How do I cancel my insurance-pay order?

Please contact our Customer Care team if you need to cancel any order. You don’t need to cancel your nasal PCR kit order if your kit has already shipped to your address. Insurance is only billed when your results are processed by the lab. You’re welcome to keep your nasal PCR kit for later use, or you can dispose of it.

What should I do if my insurance company isn't listed?

When ordering your kit through insurance, we provide a drop-down list to search for your specific insurance provider. If you do not see your insurance provider listed, then select “My Insurance Provider is not listed” and you will be able to enter your insurance information as it is listed on your card.

How does shipping work?

Your order will be delivered within 1-2 business days. Kits are only shipped to you Monday through Friday. If you order after 12 p.m. ET on a Friday or any time over the weekend, the kit will arrive the following Tuesday. Note: empowerDX is not responsible for FedEx shipping delays.

Results are available within 48 hours of dropping the kit in the mail for 95% of all orders. This turnaround time can only be achieved if the kit is placed in a local FedEx drop box before the end-of-day pickup. FedEx drop boxes do NOT pick up on Saturday or Sunday. If you use a drop box on a Friday, please make sure it’s before the end-of-day pickup.

The completed kit is overnighted to the lab, and the lab performs the test within 24 hours of receiving it. In rare cases, the lab may take up to 48 hours to perform the test.

Can you ship to PO Boxes?

Yes. However, this will likely cause a delay in your shipment because it’ll require a change in shipping carrier.

Do you ship kits outside of the US?

No, we don’t send kits outside of the United States. If you have a home address in the US, but need a kit mailed outside of the US, we are not permitted to mail it to you. You cannot return ship your kit to the lab from outside of the US.

When will I get my results back?

You’ll get test results in our secure, online portal 48 hours from when you return your test to the lab. Tests cannot be shipped back to the lab on Saturday or Sunday, and turnaround time does not include the weekend. empowerDX is not responsible for FedEx shipping delays.

Why does the “REF RANGE” section of my results say “Negative”?

A “Negative” “REF RANGE” has nothing to do with your actual test results.

“REF RANGE” means “reference range”. The reference range for vitamin D is 30-100, meaning that a normal or “healthy” level is between 30 and 100. The reference range for the At Home COVID-19 Nasal PCR Test Kit is “negative”, meaning that a normal result is “negative” – when NO SARS-CoV-2 virus is detected on the sample. Feel free to ignore this section on your test results.

Please refer to the “RESULT” section of your lab report to determine if your test results for SARS-CoV-2 are positive or negative. If the “RESULT” section of your report has a “NEGATIVE” under it, then your nasal sample didn’t have the SARS-CoV-2 on it. If the “RESULT” section of your report has a “POSITIVE” under it, then the lab detected the SARS-CoV-2 virus on your nose sample.

Why do my results say TNP?

TNP means “test not performed”. The lab was unable to test your nasal sample for the SARS-CoV-2 virus due to an issue with your kit. Please contact Customer Care for next steps.

Will my COVID-19 vaccine cause my test to result a false positive?

No. The COVID-19 vaccine will not cause a SARS-CoV-2 PCR test to be positive. Any positive PCR result after the vaccine should be treated as a true positive. Please refer to your healthcare provider for more information about the vaccine and its interaction with PCR testing.

Is it possible to get a false positive?

As of December 2020, our lab’s SARS-CoV-2 assay offers the best sensitivity of the 118 laboratories that have submitted results to FDA’s SARS-CoV-2 Reference Panel, with a limit of detection (LoD) of 180 NAAT Detectable Units/mL. We didn’t have any false positives during our FDA EUA validation study.

It is possible to have a positive test result and not be infected with COVID-19, but still have the SARS-CoV-2 virus in your nose.

If you have received a positive PCR test, we encourage you to follow CDC guidelines and have those around you get a PCR test as well.

What should I do if I receive a positive COVID-19 test?

According to CDC guidance, you should stay home and isolate from others if you test positive for COVID-19. If symptoms worsen, seek emergency medical attention immediately. You can be with others after:

  • At least 10 days since symptoms first appeared and
  • At least 24 hours with no fever without fever-reducing medication and
  • Other symptoms of COVID-19 are improving

**Loss of taste and smell may persist for weeks or months after recovery and need not delay the end of isolation

What can I do after I test negative for COVID-19?

Even if you receive a negative COVID-19 test, it’s important to remain vigilant. According to the JAMA, it’s estimated that over half of all COVID-19 transmission comes from asymptomatic and presymptomatic individuals. Additionally, new strains may cause case counts or case severity to rise. As vaccination becomes more widespread in the coming months, it’s important to continue wearing masks and test frequently for COVID-19.

Can I be cleared for airline travel with this test?

Yes – this test is a molecular nasal PCR test, and it’s the test most airlines require to be cleared before you fly.

How do I meet the 72-hour time requirement for my airline?

  1. Make sure to order your test well in advance of your upcoming flight, i.e. several weeks ahead of time.
  2. Collect and ship your sample back to the lab 3 days before your flight. The “collection date” on your results will be the day/time you collected your sample and activated your kit.
Example: Collect your sample on Monday afternoon for a Thursday morning flight. Make sure you drop off your completed kit before end-of-day pickup on Monday.
  3. Your results will be ready within 24-48 hours after the lab receives your sample. This assumes no shipping delays.
Example: If you ship your kit to the lab on Monday afternoon before end-of-day pickup, your kit should arrive at the lab on Tuesday. Results will be ready on Wednesday or Thursday. Note: empowerDX is NOT responsible for shipping delays.
  4. We’ll email you when your results have been posted in the secure empowerDX portal. Make sure to have your results ready on your phone when you go to the airport. Download them and print the results as a backup.

Do you share my COVID-19 test results with anyone?

According to the CDC, “Yes, the CARES Act requires all clinical laboratories and testing providers that perform diagnostic testing under a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certificate to report the results of any test that is intended to detect SARS-CoV-2 or to diagnose a possible case of COVID-19 (e.g., molecular, antigen, antibody), not just positive tests, to state or local public health departments. Results from surveillance testing for SARS-CoV-2 should not be reported to state or local public health departments.”

But not to worry. Other than the CARES Act requirements above due to the pandemic, we keep your personal health information private. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires that your profile and results are only accessible to you and the Licensed Ordering Physician who reviews and approves your order.
